Hartt Dances - Spring 2024

2 World Premieres by Tamisha Guy and Nobert De La Cruz III

Suite of Dances from Canticle for the Innocent Comedians (1952)  by Martha Graham

Under the Ice  by Stephen Pier

Sections from Paquita by Hilda Morales

The Hartt School at the University of Hartford will present an exhilarating program for its Hartt Dances performance series, featuring new works by internationally celebrated choreographers Norbert Dela Cruz III and Tamisha Guy. The performances, scheduled for April 11, 12, and 13 at 7:30 PM, with a matinee on April 13 at 2:00 PM at the Lincoln Theater, promise a blend of contemporary innovation and classical homage, including a notable re-staging and several esteemed works from the dance repertoire.

The showcase will premiere pieces by Norbert Dela Cruz III, a visionary choreographer known for his compelling narratives and dynamic movement, and Tamisha Guy, a performer and choreographer celebrated for her emotive power and innovative choreography. Their contributions to the dance world have earned international acclaim, and their new works are eagerly anticipated additions to the Hartt Dances program.

In a special highlight, the showcase will feature a new re-staging of Martha Graham's "Canticle for Innocent Comedians," a recently recovered work from 1952. This adaptation, overseen by principal dancer Miki Orihara, promises to breathe new life into Graham's exploration of the natural elements, offering a contemporary perspective on this classic piece.

Adding to the showcase's diversity, excerpts from Marius Petipa's ballet "Paquita," staged by Hilda Morales, will offer a nod to the classical ballet tradition. Morales, renowned for her deep understanding and interpretation of Petipa's work, will bring elegance and precision to this beloved ballet.

The evening will also  include a piece set to the music of Baroque composer Marin Marais and the contemporary cello compositions of Sofia Gubaidulina, choreographed by Stephen Pier, a former artist of the Royal Danish Ballet,  Hamberg Ballet, José Limón Company and Director of the Dance Division at The Hartt School. Pier's unique vision and rich experience promise a piece of compelling contrast between surface appearances and inner emotions.

"Hartt Dances" offers a unique opportunity to experience the breadth of dance as an art form, from classical ballet to contemporary pieces. The showcase underscores The Hartt School's commitment to excellence in dance education and performance.
