ABOUT THE BEYOND BALLET, BEYOND HIP-HOP:

Two genre-defying works that illustrate the groundbreaking directions of Japan’s current dance scene.

The Dying Swan and Its Cause of Death. Celebrated Japanese ballerina Hana Sakai steps outside her performance of the Fokine classic with Toshiki Okada’s Chelfitsch Theater Company’s tragicomic unraveling of the motif, moving beyond the choreography to muse on why the swan is dying, what it’s thinking, and how it feels to dance the part, against the backdrop of Saint-Saëns’ Le Cygne for cello.

With

Moto Takahashi’s all-woman dance group, MWMW, performs Encounter, challenging gender norms with their stunning hip-hop technique and ensemble movements.

Duration: 1 hour
