Freeform Review:
A well-dramatized production, it felt as if the dancers where drawing me into the story. The stage was set: a table, chairs, a deck of cards, and a cast of scantily clad dancers. “This is not a normal dance routine,” I thought to myself, as what looked to be like the set of an old western turned into a martial arts dojo with dancers seemingly flying across the stage. The fascination of the audience moved with the dancers as they wove together elements of drama, action, adventure, and romance into their piece. The varying nature of the underlying tones of the pieces in the dance were somber, portraying the pressures of social dynamics between couples and in the monotonous tasks of everyday life, particularly in their closing piece, “paperwork.” The artists were remarkable, performing moves on stage that seemed to come straight out of a Jacky Chan movie. This seemed to work nicely with the motif, keeping the audience fully engaged and participatory in the unfolding drama, which was occurring. The only thing that I didn’t like about the performance was the extreme amount of paper that was wasted in the enactment of the “paperwork” number; though that added to the affect and tone that the choreographer was going for. I can only hope that that much paper was not wasted in the rehearsal of the piece.
