Seduction: Tango After Dark at The Joyce Theater, New York, NY

The Tango is always wonderfully amazing to watch: the way the dancers kick, split, wrap legs around other legs, waists, the splits , the men dancing with men, the way they enter and leave the stage, the live music on stage, the drummer encased (possibly so he won’t sound too loud)!

The setting was Buenos Aires under the starlight and the lighting wreaked  the atmosphere of seduction. I could feel the bustling streets on the stage. I found myself wishing my partner (sitting beside me in the audience) and I could tango.

The singer, Antonela Cirillo accompanied by musicians Tomas Falasca, Diego Ramos, Matias Rubino, Gemma Scalia, and Jeronimo Izarrualde — came on and off the stage in different slinky costumes, looking straight into the eyes of audience members, while being tangoed by the 5 pairs of dancers.

Tango superstars Germán Cornejo and Gisela Galeassi are the choreographers.  It is cliched to say “perfection” to describe what I saw unfold on the stage before me... but that’s all I could think of while watching this performance.  Cornejo and Galeassi,  with their cast of eight dancers performed Tango After Dark at the Joyce Theater, New York, NY.  The wonderful dancers included Nicolas Schell and Nair Schinca, Esteban Simon and Marilu Leopardi, Gonzalo Bogado and Jimena Tonanez,  and Lisandro Eberle and Noelia Pizzo.

The performance featured  live musicians performing compositions of Astor Piazzolla. The choreography combines traditions of tango with a contemporary feel.
