GLIMPSES FROM BEHIND THE SCENES as Pascal Rioult and his dancers prepare their 2012 New York City Season

Pascal Rioult's passion for dance is perhaps equaled by his love of music. Known for daring, imaginative explorations of classical scores, Rioult also delves full force into musical collaborations with innovative living composers through the Dance to Contemporary Composer Series.
This season, RIOULT's audiences will be treated to a world premiere collaboration; choreography by Rioult, set to music composed by Grammy Award- winning artist, Joan Tower. Tower who is regarded as one of the most important American composers living today, famously created the Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, a 1990's response to Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man of 1942. Their, as yet untitled, work is inspired by T.S. Eliot's epic modernist poem, The Wasteland.

A Minute of Poetic Process-The beginnings of The Violet Hour
Tower comments, “Working with a choreographer is both exciting and intimidating because the creation of the dance and the music is happening simultaneously. Pascal happens to be one of those choreographers who loves music (and I happen to love dance), so connecting with him on a new score inspired by a great author creates an alluring trifecta and I look forward to seeing it all come together live.”
“As I develop this new piece,” says Rioult, “I intend to abandon the structured approach I typically use when creating a dance. Instead of letting the music drive the process, I have asked the dancers to improvise in silence, responding to images and poetic references I have selected from T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land.’ While this is a stark departure for me it is a thrilling journey for the company."
In addition to the premiere, which will be presented during every program of the season (except for the Sunday Family Matinee), audiences will experience Rioult's 2003, Firebird; his 2011, Celestial Tides; and the 2008 work ,Small Steps,Tiny Revolutions. On Sunday May 13th, the 3pm Family Matinee features Firebird and Small Steps... with more than a dozen children from the community joining RIOULT's professional dancers on stage.
