POSTCARDS: Kieran McBride and Sarah Stafford of New York Theatre Ballet Share Highlights From Their Summer
Hi, Dance Enthusiast!
Kieran McBride and Sarah Stafford here. We’re both dancers with the New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) and are going into our third season with the company. As we say goodbye to summer and look towards the start of a new season, we’ve been reflecting on the incredible performances we’ve had on tour!
NYTB’s summer season has been full of travel and adventure! In May and June we spent three weeks in upstate NY in residency with NYSCA and GoArts.
In July we performed a varied program in Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania. In all shows, Sarah performed in Laughing Matters by James Sutton, Kieran performed Roses by Douglas Dunn, and together, we performed a duet choreographed by Artistic Director, Steven Melendez.
While touring is a huge part of the work we do at NYTB, tour life is no joke. It can be difficult to adjust to different schedules, food, accommodations, and of course different stages. But for us performing for new audiences, and having the opportunity to reprise challenging repertoire is worth it.
As designated roommates for the summer Sarah and I learned how to adapt to our new environments and make them feel like home away from home. We both get extremely carsick, which I think has been the biggest hurdle for us during long van rides. Luckily company dancer Jonathan Leonard is a great driver and very understanding of our needs. I think aside from our successful performances, a highlight of the summer was visiting Niagara Falls on our day off!
We’ve had so much fun exploring new cities, and reaching new audiences. We cannot wait for all the adventures to come next season!
