Lakai Worrell, Co-Artistic Director of Purelements, says, "When we spoke to our dance instructors about who inspired them to dance, there are several names that came up, again and again. Names of people who may or may not be mainstream, but who have worked to push the envelope with their artistry, creativity, and passion for the arts. Their energy and integrity would be the defining moment for many lives, and each who calls them teacher or mentor, admits that their life would be completely different had this momentous meeting been missed. For this reason, we wanted to find a way to say 'thank you' and to share their magic with the next generation of young creative beings."
"A dance legend challenges us to see something different. They bring us all to a level of heightened consciousness by pushing their way into spaces that most are uncomfortable to travel. Their work is difficult but necessary, and even if none else see what they see, their courage remains steadfast and they create roadways that before them did not exist. This work is not for everyone, and we label them as being legendary, not just because of what they do, but because of who they help us all become, in the process of their own evolution."
"Exploring the work of legends is the study of The Arts, History, Culture, Contributions as a Global Citizen, which make the study of these individuals invaluable for these developing minds. They will learn about the challenges and triumphs of others in this estranged field of the professional dancer, and be provided with the same inspirational guidance provided their instructors when they were the same age. What they discover is that their ideas are worth exploring. That the creative energy moves through us all, and that anything is possible, so much that you are willing to live in your own courage, even when none others see the same."
