Dance News: Compliments to BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange's 2018/19 Parent/Artist Space Grantees

Celebrating six years offering this special space grant, the BAX Parent/Artist Space Grant addresses the needs artists face when trying to meet the challenges of being an artist and a parent to preschool age children. As an organization that has entered its third decade, BAX is intimately familiar with the joys and the difficulties of raising a family and creating and producing work. Join the BAX community in welcoming 2018/19 Parent/Artist Space Grant recipients Emma Jaster, Elisabeth Motley, and Molly Poerstel.

Emma Jaster is a mover, maker, and teacher who has spent her life in the study and practice of human expression.  In NY, she has served as movement director for productions with HERE Arts, Juilliard SVA, Constellation Chor, Loft Opera, and Heartbeat Opera, with whom she is an Associate Artist.  She trained internationally and has worked with U-Theatre in Taiwan, the Natanakairali Institute in India, Robert Wilson's Watermill Center, LaMama's Directors' Symposium, and the Grotowski-based Teatr Zar in Poland, among others.  Whether working in theater, dance, opera, clown, performance art, or some other hybrid form, the human body is her primary tool.  She believes in the power of art to teach us to listen better and love more; to be slower to judge and quicker to laugh.  She is currently running an international collective of artist mothers whose work can be found under #mamaisamaker.  She performed from childhood with her father, acclaimed mime Mark Jaster, and attended the Lecoq school for physical theatre in Paris.

Elisabeth Motley is a Brooklyn-based choreographer and performer. Most recently, Motley received the 2018-2019 Fulbright US-UK Scholar Award. Her work has been presented at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Sitelines, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Gibney Dance's Work Up, Festival Oltre Passo - Italy, Springboard Danse Montreal, Danspace Project's DraftWork, HERE Arts Center, Movement Research at Judson, The Chocolate Factory Theater's THROW, Dixon Place, Joyce SoHo, The Whitney Museum and The Peter Jay Sharp Theater among others. She has been an artist in residence at Chez Bushwick, Center for Performance Research, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and was a 2008 Fresh Tracks artist at Dance Theater Workshop (now NYLA). Motley has performed the works of Yvonne Rainer and Pat Catterson, and collaborated with Trisha Brown on a series of improvisational structures from 2011-2013. Elisabeth holds a BFA from the Juilliard School and MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. She is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Marymount Manhattan College and has previously taught at Snow College, Manhattanville College, Bowdoin College, and The Juilliard School.

Molly Poerstel's Are we a Fossil, and Of Facings.

Molly Poerstel has been working in New York for the past eighteen years. Her choreographic works include: Are we a Fossil, and of facings (2016), Stolen Grounds (2014), The Highlands (2014), Hungry Ghost (2013), and Do Beast (2012). As a performer, she's collaborated with: David Dorfman Dance Company (05-09), Susan Rethorst, Larissa Velez-Jackson, Ivy Baldwin, Roseanne Spradlin, Jeanine Durning, and Juliana May (currently), among others. She has taught at SUNY Purchase, Dalton School, Nanyang Fine Arts Academy in Singapore, and Eugene Lang College at The New School. She was a 2015 Movement Research AIR, 2014 New York Live Arts Studio Series Resident, and a 2013 New York Live Arts Fresh Tracks Resident.
