A dancemaker's summer...
This summer is fantastic… Full, busy and doing all I love. From two performance festivals in New York City (KODAFE and 2016 WAVE RISING in June) to upcoming festivals in September (Dance on the Lawn in Montclair, NJ and the Dumbo Festival in Brooklyn); summer intensives including YASI (Young Artist Summer Institute at NJPAC, New Jersey Performing Arts Center), NJY Camp and our own upcoming NJ SummerDance 2016 at Kean University), we are moving with full energy at lightning speed! Last week I had a fabulous experience teaching at STEPS ON BROADWAY in their Creative Tools program. Thank you Tiffany Rae-Fisher, new Artistic Director for Elisa Monte Dance, for the invite! All of this and I have still snatched time for the beach and really long walks.
Speaking of the beach...
"WAVES" (which the company will perform at SummerStage on Wednesday, July 27) was inspired by an intrigue in “waves” in its many facets: sound waves, body waves, waves of movement and impact — how one movement or action initiates or impacts another. Sound and movement connections are really at its core.
Live music: Beatboxing meets classical instruments...
Working with the brilliant musician/composer Jessie Reagen Mann, we were looking for a non-traditional group of musicians and vocalists with a broad musical range. With Jessie on cello, Dapha Mor on 3 different recorders and Pete List beatboxing and playing Shahibaja, we found a range of sounds and genres that matched the creative juxtapositions I was looking for. All these musicians are vocalists and have musical backgrounds including classical, contemporary and Mid-Eastern sounds. Come see how these all come together with the dancers and the dance at SummerStage.
What's next?
In addition to all the above, I have been planning the next two seasons and beyond. In September we will bring six dancers from the National Ballet of Sarajevo to NYC/NJ for an artistic exchange. They will train and rehearse with us for about eight days so I can set a work on them to be performed at the Sarajevo National Theater when we return there for tour in November. The performance will be held on November 22nd in conjunction with Sarajevo born, my music collaborator, Svjetlana Bukvich. I am also thrilled to be working again with brilliant storyteller, Charlotte Blake Allston, as I bring DANCE/STORIES back into Carolyn Dorfman repertory. I promise more on next season soon. Stay tuned!
