WEST HARTFORD, CT: HARTT DANCES Spring 2023
Company:
The Hartt School, University of Hartford
The Hartt School Dance Division presents works of August Bournonville, José Limón, Steven Melendez, and Pascal Rioult. Continuing its mission to expand the relationship between innovation and tradition, the April program offers works of classical ballet, a modern master work, and two new commissions. The Pas de Cinq from "Paul et Virginie", a ballet created in 1831 by the renowned Danish master choreographer, August Bournonville, is still performed in the repertory of The Royal Danish Ballet and will open the program. José Limón was one of America's legendary 20th century Modern Dance choreographers and performers whose creations are celebrated in companies around the world. Excerpts from "A Choreographic Offering", a tribute to his mentor Doris Humphrey, will be danced by a cast of over 20 dancers. Two contemporary choreographers have created new works during the Spring Repertory Project. Steven Melendez, the recently appointed Artistic Director of New York Theater Ballet and a subject of the film newly released film, "Lift", created a virtuosic reverance to music of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninov in his ballet "Tickling Titans". Inspired by the exceptional abilities of the Hartt dancers, Pascal Rioult, Artistic Director of Rioult Dance in NYC has reworked an earlier creation, "Drift", which will feature Hartt’s Foot in the Door ensemble , led by Ziwei Ma, in the music of Michael Tork's ebullient "Telephone Book".
Division Director Stephen Pier states, “This is a terrific program to show the artistic depth and stylistic breadth of our dancers. It also celebrates the joy we feel in the return to sharing our art with live audiences.”
