NYC, this is your “places” call. The show must go on in a better, safer, kinder way than before.

ALMA NYC is a not for profit dance company with philanthropic initiatives driving their creative work. Following the last year of devastation, only thirty percent of arts organizations like ALMA are returning. Ushering in their tenth year as a company, ALMA NYC invites you to join them for the virtual release of PLACES: A Look Behind the Curtain on Friday, July 30th at 7:30pm.

Artistic Director Zanza Steinberg’s choreography leaps between athletic contemporary ballet and emotive pedestrian movement, to form a style that is truly unique to the company. New, site-specific choreography paired with interviews of company members, this documentary style film will provide a true look behind the curtain of this NYC based company returning to the industry not only as a unit, but as individuals.

Artistic Director Steinberg remarks: "I have known most of these dancers for the better part of a decade; we truly are a family. So the pandemic hit the hardest for me when I realized I didn’t know how I could help my dancers. The realities are that all of these dancers had to find plan B's; they couldn't train the way dancers need, to maintain technique and strength required for safe execution of movement, and everyone faced the heartbreak of isolation in our city which became the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic. The emotional toll that took on so many people I felt responsible for was tremendous. Even more so, we're a company that's had it's hand on the pulse of NYC and what we can bring to communities in our city for nine and a half years. This intermission has been a wake up call for us on how important that community work and advocacy really is."

With a tenacious all female team at the helm, ALMA NYC looks optimistically towards their future as the world reopens, and the company finally reunites after 16 long months apart.

Filmed and edited by Allison Zdunczyk, Neville Braithwaite, and Zanza Steinberg. Dancers and interviewees include: Davonna Batt, Antuan Byers, Justin Campbell, Nicole Davis, Abbey Hunt, Eliazar Jimenez, Darrell T. Joe, Julia Kane, Julia Neveu, Michal Kolaczkowski, Diane Meck, Christopher Morrissey, Courtney Murray, Omar Nieves, Kaitlin Niewoehner, Melodye Redding, Hannah Russell, Paige Sabo, Ashley Talluto, and more.
