A professional waacking artist and teacher of the 1970s club dance discipline, in a New York Times interview, Princess Lockerooo says waacking is unique because “the repetition of embodying confidence, which is required to do the dance — whether you feel it or not, you have to imitate it or fake it — that repetition eventually allows that feeling to live inside your body, and it becomes your reality.”
Harold O’Neal
Pianist, composer, actor and dancer Harold O’Neal has performed with U2 , appeared in Jay-Z’s “Young Forever” video, and portrayed a piano-playing hepcat in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He has been featured on MTV, NPR’s All Things Considered, Public Radio International’s Studio 360, Fortune – and been compared to Duke Ellington and Maurice Ravel by The New York Times. In the midst of the pandemic, O’Neal released a 6-track EP titled Marvelous Fantasy: Brave Living Dreams and served as a creative expert for Pixar’s Academy Award winning film Soul. Rob Wolcott of FORBES magazine writes: “In addition to O’Neal’s spontaneity, he’s one of the most distinctive, creative, insightful musicians at work today.”
Dwayne Beach
For Dwayne Beach, the past few years have been an exploration of movement with sound. He has worked extensively with Kuchipudi Indian classical dance expert Yamini Kalluri, and together they have created a composition titled “East Meets West” which has been performed in the U.S. and abroad. He has played with the Asian Cultural Symphony of New York, One World Symphony, and the Sarajevska Filharmonija. He made his debut as a solo violist with Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2010.
