Downtown to Uptown. Past to Forward revisits pivotal DDD pieces from the early 2000s: Approaching Some Calm, Impending Joy, and Lightbulb Theory. The pieces, restaged in later years at 92NY honor the Harkness Dance Center’s 90th Anniversary Season and their enduring support of DDD and dance in the city.
Approaching Some Calm is excerpts from a duet between Dorfman and his wife, Lisa Race. This work was a 10-year follow up from Approaching No Calm and sought to capture the moment in time where their friendship turned into a marriage, plus a four year old son.
As Jenninfer Dunning wrote for The New York Times in 2004, “the title Impending Joy says it all. Someone was always painfully isolated from the others in a quartet for storm-tossed rag dolls that drew on the dancers’ impressively subtle acting skills.”
Lightbulb Theory has drawn acclaim far and wide for its sensitive approach to life, death and everything in between. You see what has always drawn audiences to the work of DDD — humanity, plainly expressed with all its zany glory.
Originating cast members Paul Matteson and Joseph Poulson join DDD Alums Jenna Riegel, Aya Wilson and DDD current company members David Dorfman, Lily Gelfand, Kashia Kancey, Nik Owens, Lisa Race and Claudia-Lynn Rightmire for a truly special evening.
