Through Dance Place’s Creative Residency Program, we are delighted to host MK Abadoo/MKArts as she develops Hoptown, her newest immersive and intergenerational dance work. Hoptown is inspired by the near parallel lives of Hopkinsville “Hoptown,” Kentucky natives: bell hooks and Regina Bowden, MK’s mother.

Hoptown (which has no informal showing) is infused with Sistering, a blueprint of fortified tenderness designed by southern black women, girls and gender expansive folks. MK Abadoo’s work artfully combines contemporary African dance, classical American and postmodern techniques, traditional Ghanaian movements and social Funk styles.

MK Abadoo is a seasoned performing arts professional with multi-award-winning performances touring nationally and internationally. She devises intergenerational dance performance rituals that are place-honoring, and accountable to community partners. Moving from a spirit of joy and ease, our community building amplifies the lives, stories and wisdom of Black, queer, women and gender expansive folks. She is a choreographer, educator, and cultural organizer. MK is also a 2016-2017 U.S. Fulbright Fellow and was selected by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to Watch in 2018”!
