The Memory Variations (World Premiere)
Company:
ZCO/DANCEPROJECT
ZCO/DANCEPROJECT, a physically-integrated company dedicated to the inclusion of people with disabilities in dance and society, premieres The Memory Variations. Choreographed by Chris Heller, this piece explores the resonance of memories—both joyous and challenging—to illuminate the essence of our shared experiences. The program will also include works by Zazel-Chavah O'Garra, Wendy Ann Powell Rush Johnson and Maguette Camera that reflect on the theme of memory.
ZCO/Dance Project (ZCODP) is a physically integrated dance company whose mission is to create performances that are witty, soulful, intelligent, powerful and intriguing, and to encourage the integration and inclusion of people with disabilities in dance and in society. ZCODP was intentionally created as a physically integrated dance company to remove attitudinal barriers, reduces prejudices, and stereotyping.
ZCODP is committed to providing opportunities that empower its dancers to gain confidence, and harnesses the power of art and dance to address social and cultural ‘isms’ about disability, mental health, and social acceptance.
ZCODP has been presented in theaters, public spaces and festivals including ADA 30, WESTFEST DANCEFESTIVAL, Judson Church, Dixon place theatre, Symphony Space, Cooper Hewitt Museum, 4th International Festival of disability, ABILITIES EXPO, Theatre for the New City, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, as well as artist residencies at Downtown Brooklyn Arts residency, Fertile Ground at Greenspace, CUNY Dance Initiative and ARTS4ALLFLORIDA. ZCODP is the recipient of the City Arts Corp grant, Dance Advancement Fund, and Flushing Town Hall/NYSCA grants.
ZCO/DANCEPROJECT's residency at Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is held in partnership with York College.
The work was developed through a residency supported by the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), an expansive program providing New York City choreographers and dance companies with creative residencies on CUNY college campuses. www.cuny.edu/danceinitiative
