In 1829, great American writer Washington Irving went to Spain. He documented his journey, his stay at the Alhambra, and the legends of that magnificent Moorish palace in Granada in the best-seller, “Tales of The Alhambra.” Mosaic Dance Theater Company brings Irving’s words and exquisite of language to life through dance, movement, and spoken word in their new production of Impressions of the Alhambra.

Adapted and directed by Producing Artistic Director Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Impressions of The Alhambra features a cast of 10. Choreographer Samara Adell, MDTC’s Artistic Director for Dance, and Guest Choreographer Carlos Fittante, also Artistic Director of the BALAM Dance Theatre, based in New York City, have created new works in Middle Eastern dance,  Spanish escuela bolero, Baroque, fusion, and interpretive style. Performing in the production are: Samara Adell, Anna Berkun, Nina Brewton, Carlos Fittante, Kendra Dushac McCarthy, Barbara Romero, Mina Rose, Katherine Shamdin, Michael Takiff, and Morgiana Celeste Varricchio.

Mosaic Dance Theater Company (MDTC), based in Glen Ridge, NJ, is dedicated to the dance and folklore of the Mediterranean region -- North Africa, the Middle East, and southern Europe. The dances and music, the stories and myths, and the history and legends of this fascinating area form the wellspring of inspiration for MDTC’s creative vision.  Founded in 2003 by Producing Artistic Director Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, this critically acclaimed company is known for its artistry and authenticity, not only in creating the original works that comprise its repertory, but also in faithfully researching their origins to ensure cultural integrity.  Touring nationally to performing arts venues, universities, schools, and community institutions, the Company is the recipient of the Sunshine Award for its contribution to the performing arts, recognized by NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) and the United Nations.

Made possible by funds from the Essex County Division of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
